When
two musicians of different generation and origin met in Madrid
in autumn 2009, it became quickly evident that they had a common
goal: The fusion of jazz and flamenco. Therefore, it is not surprising
that this newly founded duo sounds as if they had been playing
together for many years. Since their premiere at the Festival
de Jazz Voll Damm de La Escalera de Jacob in Madrid in April 2010,
they have been arranging their compositions for this duo-project.
Besides their original compositions, some uniquely arranged jazz
standards have made it into the repertoire, together with a handful
of traditional themes from around the globe (Greece, Balkan).
However, the old rhythmic and harmonic tradition of flamenco is
always present.
Tian, a.k.a. Christian
Korthals, was born in Nuremberg (Germany) in 1978 and learnt to
play the piano as a child, and later the saxophone. After studying
linguistics and computer science, he set off for a one-year journey
around the world as a street musician. It was during this time
also that he started to compose. After his return, Tian studied
the saxophone at the ArtEZ University of the Arts at Arnhem (Netherlands)
with Jörg Kaufmann, Hazel Leach, Henk Haverhoek and others.
For years, Tian has been busy with flamenco, both on his instrument
and in his compositions. He published two CDs with his projects
“Tian et al” and “El Viento”, and played
concerts throughout Germany, the Netherlands, Poland and Spain
with very positive press response. His compositions are published
by Advance Music, Germany’s leading publishing house for
jazz.
Angel Rubio was born in
1955 in Asturias (Spain) and studied not only Psychology, but
more important, also the flamenco guitar with Miguel de Cordoba.
In the 1970s, he was known as one of the most interesting avant-garde
jazz musicians in Spain. His “Big Band del Foro” was
probably Spain’s first big band and earned him a composition
price for Quite (1991) and an award as “best jazz album
of the year” for Manifestacion (1993). With his group “Black
Market”, Angel was creating a fusion of flamenco, world
music and jazz and released the CDs “World Music”
and “Distant Worlds”. With his group “Angel
Rubio’s Jazz Hondo” he worked together with the flamenco
singers Chalequito, Paco del Pozo and Curro Cueto. Furthermore,
Angel has worked with Maria Joao, Monika Lingues, Janet Thuita,
Paul Stocker, Perico Sambeat, Evaldo Robson, Laurent Filipe and
Javier Paxariño.
